University Jean Monnet track-record in welcoming international students

University Jean Monnet, is a multidisciplinary university (Faculties of law, medicine, sciences and technology, humanities, arts, literature & languages, a department of political sciences, an institutes of technologies, an institute of business administration, an engineering school), training over 20,000 students in 2015/2016, producing 5600 graduates every year and with a 133 millions € budget. UJM is part of of the “Federation of HEIs” Université de Lyon, a leader in Higher Education in the nation: it’s the most important French University site outside the Paris region and one of the top 10 European universities with 120,000 students, 5,000 PhD students, 16 doctoral schools, 550 public & private laboratories and 11,500 academic and research staff.

Key features of UJM internationalization strategy entail:
> 17,6% of international students from 115 countries;
> International scholarships available through the UJM Foundation (designed to attract students in our international master’s degrees – 10,000 €/student); Erasmus+ Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (E+EMJMD) scholarships (EU-funded scholarships for international students with an outstanding academic profile, up to 49,000 €/student), and mobility scholarships (Erasmus+ mobility, government-sponsored scholarships);
> 9 degrees (mainly Masters) fully taught in English and a vast range of courses taught in English in our course catalogue;
> 3 Master degrees proposed through our distance learning platform (mainly for international students);

COSI / COlor in Science and Industry / is a 2-year Master of Science training the next generation of highly-skilled industrial experts in applied colour science offered by leading academic and industrial partners

CIMET / Color in Informatics and MEdia Technology / is a 2-year research Master of Science in fundamental colour science, training students to cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research projects since 2008

3DMT / 3D Multimedia Technology / is a 2-year Master of Science educating students in advanced methodologies
and models of computational 3D imaging and media technologies

MLDM / Machine Learning and Data Mining / is a 2-year Master Degree that provides advanced knowledge and skills on data-driven decision-making

CPS2 / Cyber Physical Social System / is a 2-years master level academic programme, awarded by an internationally recognized French master’s degree in Computer Science, is designed to prepare tomorrow’s engineers and scientists in advanced Mobile and Social methods and technologies for Smart Applications.

Our commitment towards European education excellence is best demonstrated by the fact the UJM has been the only European HEI to be granted as coordinating institution two E+EMJMD during the first Call for Proposal of the new Erasmus+ programme in 2014, and the only European HEI to manage ongoing 3 E+EMJMD projects.

We strive for excellence in welcoming international students through implementation of high-level support services: welcoming week, visa application support, accommodation booking, academic tutoring, administrative guidance, banking, health and cultural services, and French language courses offered to all incoming international students.

Research base

Laboratoire Hubert Curien’s core competence in photonics systems and diffractive optics science and technologies are based on micro/nano technologies, laser processing,biophotonics and image processing. These have been expanded to include research in computer science, machine learning and applied cryptography & telecom.

Since the early nineties, academic research on Computational Color Imaging has been conducted by Professor Alain Trémeau and his team at University Jean Monnet. Their research activities focus on:

Image segmentation
Calibration of displays and projection devices,
Quality control, Image quality metrics
Color appearance models
The team currently consists of eight associated professors plus one professor and their work focus on:

Video motion tracking, Video segmentation (Hubert Konik),
Motion saliency, Visual appearance models (Eric Dinet),
Object recognition, Color invariants (Damien Muselet),
Color difference metrics, Image quality metrics, Multispectral imaging (Alain Trémeau)
And other themes linked to Image Processing.
This team has published numerous articles, organised or contributed to numerous international conferences (CGIV 2010, CCIW 2009, CGIV 2004, CGIP 2000) and summer schools (IPCV 2004, EHINC 1999). Through numerous book chapters editing, team members have largely contributed to the international Color research community.This team has also supervised many PhD Thesis and Master Thesis on both Academic and Industrial projects. Since 2009, this team has been associated to the Hubert Curien Laboratory (UMR CNRS 5516) that accounts for the biggest Research Unit at University Jean Monnet.Hubert Curien Laboratory core competences in photonics systems and diffractive optics science and technologies are based on micro/nano technologies, laser processing, biophotonics and image processing.

These have been expanded to include research in Computer science and Machine learning.With an annual budget topping 1200 K€, Hubert Curien Laboratory is pushed forward by national agencies (French government and CNRS) to transfer its knowledge to the industry by means of industrial contracts, technical transfer projects, patent licensing and the creation of spin-off companies. Hubert Curien Laboratory, has about 4000 m2 dedicated to research in the heart of the Scientific and Technologic Park of the University Jean Monnet called “Pôle Optique et Vision” in close connections with private companies and institutions such as the PORA (Rhône-Alpes Region Optical Center). More than 120 researchers and PhD students work today in the two research department of the lab: “Optics and photonics” Department and “Computer science and image processing” Department. The number of Professors and Assistant Professors with permanent positions has increased by 30% over the last 10 years. The number of PhD, Post Doctoral and non-permanent positions has increased by 67% over the same time period.
